Most of you who read my blog know that I've had hip replacement surgery not once, but twice. On the same hip. The second time, rehab was excrutiating. After slicing into the major muscles a second time, it was difficult to near-impossible to recover the normal use of my leg.
The muscles are still weak and nothing I do can strengthen them beyond a certain limit. That's just as far as they will be able to go, and I've pretty much accepted that. But it means I have difficulty walking any distance or length of time.
And isn't walking supposed to be the best exercise? Well, not for me, not if I can't go the length of a city block without muscle fatigue and that lumbar "lurch" setting in.
So I was at a loss as to what kind of exercise I can get that doesn't put undue stress and strain on already taxed-to-their-limit muscles.
Until I discovered Trim Treads.
Trim Treads are revolutionary. These extraordinary sandals are designed to use and strengthen core muscles that aren't normally used. Their unique design is intended to:
- Increase leg strength.
- Lengthen muscles.
- Help prevent injury.
- Ease pain from plantar fasciitis naturally.
- Greatly improve circulation in the legs and feet, reducing swelling.
- Cut exercise time in half.
- Help you burn calories and lose weight (with proper diet).
- Improve posture and lessen low back pain naturally.
- Greatly improve balance and inner core strength, improving back health.
- Create healthy looking lower extremities.
- Exercise your lower body while you are doing everyday activities.
- Can be worn any time, any place (except sandals and boots in wet weather or while driving).
- Make exercise enjoyable and affordable.
- Increase your health awareness.
- Allow you to exercise when you don't have the time.
The first time I put Trim Treads on my bare feet and stood up, I nearly busted my butt. I admit it. They have a rather extreme design cut, but that very design is what benefits you. So I just took my time and got used to balancing on them before trying to walk. It's kinda like walking on tiptoes - or rather like walking on very short stilts. I tried to keep my balance on just the part that was touching the floor, because if I allowed my ankles to rock normally, I felt the sensation of toppling over.
So I warn you that it does take a little getting used to. But I am happy to say very little. After I felt that I had my balance, I took a few tentative steps. It felt awkward at first, I'll admit...but that went away quickly the longer I kept them on.
I walked to the kitchen and washed dishes while wearing them, gently rocking back and forth while standing in one spot (and having the sink to grab onto if I felt myself teetering a little!) and let me tell you, I could instantly feel the muscles being used. Not stressed and pulled and abused, just used. I could tell these were muscles that I don't normally use in my daily routine, or at least I don't use them to quite this extent.
After a couple of days, I was no longer teetering and tottering and feeling like I might fall flat on my face. You do get used to them, and they do give your muscles a workout. Now I try to remember to wear them every day, even if it's only for a few minutes at a time, as I'm doing dishes or laundry or whatever. I wouldn't dare try to wear them on stairs or even outside, at least not until I become more used to them, but let me tell you, even just 5 minutes a day will make a big difference!
There is a lot of information on the Trim Treads website. I urge you to go read about these marvelous sandals and decide for yourself if they might be something that could help you. With my two hip replacements and severely weakened leg muscles, I know I'm not the ideal person to be recommending these for the average user. But if they work for me, imagine what they'll do for you!
Trim Treads does caution that they run a full size larger than what you expect, so if you wear a size 7, order a size 6. If you wear a half size, go to the lower full size when you order, for instance if you wear size 7 1/2, order size 6. You don't want them feeling loose at all; they need to fit rather snugly to insure safety and full efficiency.
They are very well made and will last a long time. Comfortable too. I was a little leery of getting that soreness between my big toe and the next toe that you get when breaking in new flipflops, but that hasn't been the case at all. Except for the workout your muscles are getting, you hardly know you're wearing them at all. At only $39.99, they are a bargain as far as at-home exercise equipment!
Aside from the sandals I received to try, they also come in clogs and boots. For the more adventurous among you, you could wear these in public as "real shoes". I prefer to wear them in the comfort and privacy (and security) of my home. To each his/her own!
