My good friend Patrick has been plagued all his life with a bad case of eczema. His back and arms are covered with dry, scaly, itchy patches and he's so self-conscious about it that he only wears long-sleeved shirts.
Even in the heat of summer.
I feel for him. My skin is oily and I'm lucky I've never had a problem with dry or sensitive skin. But even "oily" skin needs moisturizing.
So I was very happy when Alabu agreed to supply some of their marvelous products for me to review. What? You've never heard of Alabu? Well, let me introduce you!
Alabu Inc. makes soap and skin products using only all-natural ingredients like goat milk, shea butter, oats, olive oil, and honey. These natural ingredients gently cleanse your skin while leaving it soft and nourished. Goat milk is especially good for you - it is loaded with milk protein and vitamins A, B6, C, and E, which all promote healthy skin.
Did you know that commercial soaps are mostly detergent? They leave your skin feeling itchy and dry. Commercial soap manufacturers might include moisturizers in their formulas in order to combat this dryness. But the soap is still overly harsh for regular skin use, especially for sensitive skin.
Alabu soaps are completely different. You can safely use these soaps and skin products on even the most sensitive skin. There's nothing harsh about them, no added chemicals, nothing that doesn't occur naturally in nature.
I received a very generous sampling of Alabu products and the first thing I tried was the ultra-moisturizing cleansing bar called "Baby Me". The goat milk and shea butter ingredients assured me that I would be doing something gentle but beneficial for my skin.
Wow! My first shower with the Baby Me bar of soap was incredible! The box says "unscented", but when I held the bar to my nose, I could smell it. What the...? But when I started lathering my body with it, there was no scent to the lather at all. And it's hard to describe just how soft it made my skin feel! I felt like I'd just used a very rich moisturizer on my whole body, but I still felt clean. That is the way a soap should perform!
So Baby Me is definitely on my list for future purchases. It is gentle enough for a baby's skin, and in fact that's what my skin felt like after my first shower - like a baby's soft skin. This is Alabu's top seller and it's easy to understand why. And it's only $5.15 per bar - quite a bargain!
The Oat & Honey cleansing bar has the added ingredients of oats and honey that really soften your skin while the goat milk and natural oils moisturize. This was a great all-around soap, especially for those problem areas like heels, elbows, knees, etc. that tend to have rough skin. My skin felt softer and more pliant. This soap is also unscented and also only $5.15 per bar.
But if you're like me and love fragrance, you might like the Almond cleansing bar. The fragrance of almonds is one of my all-time favorites, and this soap is simply wonderful! Alabu uses Fair Trade Bitter Almond Essential Oil in this soap and it is a scent that both men and women will appreciate. And at only $4.55 per bar, it would make a splendid gift!
I also was given the opportunity to try Alabu's classic Lip Balm in mint which I can say without a doubt is head and shoulders above all other lip balms I've tried. There's nothing "waxy" or greasy about this lip balm. It literally seems to melt into your skin while making your lips incredibly smooth and soft. Alabu hit a home run with this product! Only $3.50 per tube.
Alabu's Replenish roll-on facial moisturizer is fabulous for keeping in your purse to combat those small dry, scaly, tight, itchy spots that sometimes pop up on your face and neck and maybe other areas as well. Ladies, don't look at me like that - you know what I'm talking about! This roll-on moisturizer is made of 100% Squalane. Squalane (a naturally occurring substance found in the olive) is very similar to Vitamin A and resembles the skin's own natural oil. At only $5.75, it's definitely preferable to those outlandishly expensive department store products!
Alabu's Shea Body Butter is awesome for overall moisturizing right where you need it (knees, elbows, heels, etc.) because it comes in a convenient roll-up container that fits in your purse or pocket. This is concentrated shea butter, so a little goes a long way. Only $4.90 for a very generous supply.
Most of Alabu's products are unscented. But if you go with a scented product, you can rest assured that Alabu uses only essential oils. Nothing artificial at all. And they use Fair Trade ingredients whenever possible. Everything is handcrafted right here in the good ol' U. S. of A.

I can't wait to share these soaps and products with my friend Patrick. He's tried everything under the sun to combat his eczema problem and nothing has worked for him. But I bet he hasn't tried Alabu! I have high hopes that these products will at least provide him some much needed relief.
And maybe he will finally be able to ditch the long sleeves in summer!
