Autre Peau fits like an "other skin" {review}

I took a look at my closet the other day... and what I found there really put me in a blue funk.

I've mentioned many times how tiny my apartment is. I have one closet. ONE. CLOSET. And it too is tiny. And crammed full. My clothes are all so wrinkled in there, what's the point of hanging them up at all??

But I digress...

The point I was getting to is that there are clothes in my closet that I never wear. Never. Some are too small, and I keep thinking I'll lose weight and be able to wear them again (yeah right!) and some are just too pretty and special to get rid of, whether I'm wearing them or not.

Take the really pretty blouse my mother gave me for my birthday. It's gorgeous! Who knew she had such good taste!

{ahem}

The blouse is black satin with silver threads in a dazzling design. It's really, REALLY pretty, but... it scratches when I wear it. The silver threads are beautiful but scratchy.

So you see what I mean? I hate to get rid of the blouse, not only because it's beautiful but because my mother gave it to me. But I can't wear it because it's just too uncomfortable.

Enter Autre Peau... French for "other skin".

Autre Peau's line of undergarments is designed to be your "other skin", to be the barrier between you and itchy, irritating, or transparent clothing.
Their website says:

Women are raving about the many benefits of wearing autrepeau "other skin" undershirts, camisoles, and pant liners:

* ~ lightweight, whisper-thin, form-fitting fabric adds no bulk under clothing!
* ~ takes the edge off itchy sweaters and stiff suits!
* ~ serves as a clothing "liner" so you can dry clean and launder less!
* ~ catches embarrassing perspiration!
* ~ long in length, stays tucked in and hides the muffin top! Also, great for maternity!
* ~ made in the USA!

Autre Peau products come in camisole, tank, turtleneck, scoop-neck, V-neck, long sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, short sleeve, sleeveless, and they have pants liners as well. Whatever article of clothing you wish you could wear if you had an "other skin" between you and it, Autre Peau has a product for you!

About autrepeau:

autrepeau was created out of the need for the ultimate innerwear. Originally started by two women working in the financial world, they heard that women were uncomfortable in stiff suits, itchy sweaters and clingy silk and were tired of spending their hard earned money on dry cleaning!

They set out to create a product that would make their lives more comfortable. They envisioned a second skin that would provide a lightweight buffer between them and their itchy garments. They relentlessy searched for the perfect fabric that would not add any bulk under clothes. The garments were made form-fitting and long in length so they would not pop out of low-rise pants. Unlike shaper products, autrepeau is designed for comfort!

In 2010, Melissa Hayes-Intermill purchased autrepeau. From many years of working as an insurance consultant, Melissa was no stranger to stiff shirts and uncomfortable fabrics of suits and often found relief with autrepeau pieces. Not only was she more comfortable throughout her day when wearing autrepeau, but she also saved time and money from fewer trips to the dry cleaner. Wanting to share her secret with the world, Melissa acquired autrepeau out of desire to provide women with exceptional products to improve daily life.

In her role as owner, Melissa takes a hands-on, proactive approach to business and takes on the responsibility of all aspects of the business. From research and development to visiting the New York City sewing facilities to rebranding the company image, Melissa plans to further grow and expand the line to meet the needs of the ever-changing woman.

I received the 3/4 Length Sleeve V-Neck garment (above) to review and let me tell you, this is a fantastic product! I couldn't wait to put it on and then try out some of those clothes in my closet that I never wear because of the irritation. I am very happy to report to you that Autre Peau works!! Although the Autre Peau garment itself is sheer and lightweight, it definitely provided just the "barrier" I needed between my skin and those scratchy garments. Perfect!!

One other thing I love about the Autre Peau products is that they are longer than you would expect, fitting well past my natural waistline and onto my hips. This is so that you can tuck them into your skirt or pants and they won't ride up. Very thoughtful designing!

I also own several very nice bulky turtleneck sweaters that I never wear because they itch me to death. While the V-neck top that I received might not help with the scratchy necks of my sweaters, I can purchase the turtleneck Autre Peau in either long sleeve or sleeveless and be able to wear those pretty sweaters again.
Yay!! By simply adding Autre Peau (my new "other skin") products, my entire wardrobe just doubled right before my eyes! I'll be able to wear those clothes that have been stuck in closet oblivion for years now. And it's been so long, I'll have to remind my mother that she gave me this gorgeous blouse I'm wearing. (don't tell her our little secret!)

Now that I've solved the itchy-scratchy clothing dilemma, there's still the problem of all those clothes that I no longer fit into... I hung on to the itchy-scratchy things and finally found a solution. Perhaps one day I'll have dropped enough weight to fit into the rest.

A girl can hope, right? :)

Autre Peau products are sold from their website and also in many retail outlets around the country. Find a store near you.

Discount! Autre Peau has very kindly offered Shady Lady readers a generous 25% off discount using code LADY10 at checkout. So don't delay! Fall is coming soon, and winter and holidays follow, and you know there are sweaters and pants and stuff in your closet that you want to wear if only you had an "other skin"...

Disclosure: I was provided a sample from Autre Peau gratis in exchange for providing an unbiased review of the product. (Thanks Melissa!) No other monetary consideration was involved, and my review was not influenced in any way.

Snazzy bath! Izola Graphic Shower Curtain {giveaway}

GIVEAWAY CLOSED - PENDING WINNER VERIFICATION

If there's one thing I am, it's frugal. I have to be, since I live alone and am my own sole support. So I spend a lot of time in discount stores looking over the wares, trying to stretch my meager income to cover all the things I need.

Like shower curtains. Yeah, I've looked at shower curtains in the major department stores and major online outlets, but honestly? I wasn't impressed. I've never been the ruffle-y type, so those frilly shower curtains that cost upwards of $40-$50 just don't appeal to me.

And especially since I can get a simple, utilitarian shower curtain at the dollar store for a few bucks. Those frilly curtains look great in someone else's home, with the matching toilet seat cover, floor rug, tissue box cover, etc. etc. But it's not for me. A plain ol' see-through plastic shower curtain liner serves me well, thank you very much.

So imagine my delight when I found Izola Shower! You have got to see these shower curtains! Izola makes the most eye-catching shower curtains I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot of them.

In awed fascination I perused the graphic shower curtains available at Izola. Here, take a look for yourself and you'll see what I mean --

World Destination Shower Curtains featuring Venice, Brooklyn Bridge, Las Vegas, Paris, Trafalgar Square, and Rio de Janeiro.

Maps Shower curtains featuring the officially licensed New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority Subway Map, the Chicago Transit Authority Subway Map and Eurail map.

Patterns - unique shower curtain patterns made to enlighten your mood. Includes Homebound, Buddha, Bamboo, Foliage, Feathers, Barbershop.

Artist Series - Izola featured artist series shower curtains.

Cotton Shower Curtains - 100% Cotton Shower Curtains in fabulous fabrics and designs.
What did I tell you? Did I lie?? :) I am absolutely in love with Izola Shower Curtains!

I decided I wanted the Las Vegas shower curtain for my very own. Just as I was about to hit "order", it occured to me that my readers might like to be introduced to Izola Shower Curtains as well. So when I contacted Izola about doing a product review and giveaway, they very generously agreed.

So I received the Las Vegas shower curtain to review for my blog. Here's how it appears on their website -
Don't you just love it!! VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!

And here's how it appears in my tiny apartment bathroom -
Sorry about the overhead light glare, but that just shows how shiny the curtain is! I am absolutely in love with my new Izola shower curtain and I can't sing their praises loudly enough.

• Material: 100% PVC with nickel plated grommets

• Color: black and white

• Size: 72"x72"

• Care: Wipe clean with a damp cloth

Remember I said I previously only bought dollar store shower curtains for a few bucks? I don't have to tell you that you get what you pay for, right? Those cheap shower curtains are just that - cheap. My new Izola Las Vegas shower curtain is made from heavy gauge plastic that hangs beautifully and is very substantial, unlike the micro-thin discount store variety.

One other little detail that convinced me Izola Shower Curtains are a better bargain than discount store curtains is the fact that they have nickel-plated grommets where you put your hooks. Most cheap curtains only have a punched hole in the plastic, and one good yank rips it beyond repair.

I might have to get some new shower curtain hooks to go with my fabulous new Las Vegas shower curtain, because the old colorful butterfly hooks I have now just don't meet the aesthetic. (these were my only concession to something "frilly" in my bathroom :)
So if you're looking for something to snazz up your bathroom, or snazz up a guest bathroom that will also be an enchanting conversation piece, you can't go wrong with Izola Shower Curtains! Take it from a frugal, single, tiny-apartment dweller, an Izola shower curtain will add more character to your bath than products costing many times more! I couldn't be happier and I will definitely be purchasing Izola Shower Curtains in the future - but the quality of the Las Vegas curtain I received to review assures me that will be several years from now. :)

My skin needs microdermabrasion!

Microdermabrasion: a family of cosmetic procedures popular in day spas, doctors' practices, and medical spas in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion, to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. (per Wikipedia)

I need it. I want it. It's expensive. I can't afford it. But I still need and want it.

Why? Because even though I am {mumble mumble} years old (okay, I'm 57, dammit, are you happy now?? grrr...) my skin, especially my facial complexion, has never been clear. Never.

Never.

I've always had these red spots that no amount of makeup will cover. I get blackheads and whiteheads that no amount of scrubbing will erase. And I have pores on my nose the size of moon craters.

Not to mention perpetually scaly skin on my elbows and feet that no amount of lotion or cream will fix.

So when I saw this promotion where I could win an at home microdermabrasion system just for posting on my blog that I want to win, I knew I had to go for it.

Professional microdermabrasion costs big bucks. I don't have big bucks, unless I win the lottery. (big bucks, big bucks, no whammies!) So I'm not holding my breath on the lottery thing. But I would LOVE to win this SkinCareRX at home dermabrasion system!

Maybe this would finally be the product that I've wanted all my life to help me get that peaches and cream complexion I've envied on other women. No matter how many drug store products I try, from gentle to downright harsh, nothing helps. It's like my skin has formed an impenetrable barrier ("for protection" - yeah right).

But after reading about the SkinCareRX Personal Microderm, I'm convinced that it will help me because it uses the same procedure and materials that are employed in those fancy spas and dermatologist offices that cost thousands of dollars and they charge you hundreds of dollars to perform. I could do it myself in the comfort and privacy of my own home.

I'm in love! Gimme!!

Excellent for storing lots of small jewelry items in a limited space. It won't hold too many large costume pieces, but if you only use this for small items, like earrings, rings, and watches, it is more than adequate for the average person.

Clipa for a Cure! {giveaway}

{GIVEAWAY CLOSED - pending winner verification}

The wonderful folks over at Clipa have a great promotion going right now. They will donate 10% of the retail price of every pink Clipa purchased to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The BCRF is the most highly rated breast cancer organization in the U.S., consistently receiving the highest rating—4 stars—since 2002 from Charity Navigator and outperforming over 5,000 other charities.
The pink Clipa is a great way for you to express your support for Breast Cancer awareness while helping raise money for breast cancer research. And you get a great product too.

Clipa is one of the most ingenious inventions I've seen in a while. I absolutely love it! It is designed like a bracelet--in fact you can wear it as a bracelet so that it is always handy--but function and design go hand in hand with this beauty.
How many times have you had to set your purse down somewhere that you wouldn't normally touch with your own hands? I'm talking about public places like bars, restaurants, movie theaters, arenas, at concerts, sporting events, public restrooms...the list goes on.

Not only is it unsafe to have your purse sitting on the floor, it's unclean. Think about the germs. Oh, I'm sure the place gets a daily mopping, but in the meantime are you supposed to just plop down your purse and hope for the best?

I have to admit, this was not even something I thought about until I heard about the Clipa. And now that it's been brought to my attention, I'm using my Clipa every chance I get. Germs are everywhere, we can't fight them all, but we can certainly use precautionary measures to limit our exposure to them.
And that's where the Clipa does an outstanding job. The design is so simple, it works. The Clipa is a round metal ring, painted in bright colors or metallic finishes, with a hinge so it can easily be opened, and two clip pads with non-slip surfaces to cling wherever you need it. And even though it's heavy-duty metal that can hold up to 45 pounds, it weighs only about 2 ounces.

That's one sturdy little Clipa!

Check out this article from ABC News on handbag germs.

I for one am bad about plopping my handbag on the kitchen counter, especially when I'm bringing in groceries and stuff. I never thought about the millions of germs that hitched a ride on the bottom of my purse! And just washing my hands before preparing food won't kill the germs already there because of my purse.

It makes you think, doesn't it? Isn't it time you invested in a Clipa? Getting in the habit of using the Clipa could keep you and your loved ones a lot healthier!

The Clipa is reasonably priced and comes in many different colors. There's a special shipping price of only $3.25 to most locations in the US. It's a small investment that could reap big benefits in health and cleanliness.

I was sent a Clipa for review and let me tell you, it now goes everywhere my purse goes! If I'm not wearing it as a bracelet, I've got it hanging from my purse strap so it is always within reach. Here's a great video on using the Clipa -

Clipa very generously sent me two Clipas - one for myself to review, and one to giveaway to a lucky Shady Lady reader! You have your choice of polished silver or white.

Clipa is giving one lucky reader a Clipa in either polished silver or white! Lucky you!! Open to US only please.

My Review of Bell & Howell Brasstone Sunlight Floor Lamp

Doesn't Deliver on the Hype

Pros: Sturdy, Easy Assembly

Cons: Limited Illumination, Short Cord

Best Uses: Reading

Describe Yourself: Bargain Hunter

Received in a timely manner. Box was HEAVY! Assembly required, but not a problem. Pieces snap or screw together easily. Base is heavy (that's what gave the box so much weight) for stability. The freearm swings very easily - almost too easily. If you're carrying the lamp from one place to another, be careful it doesn't swing out and damage something or someone in the process.

Illumination does look natural, but the field is so limited this lamp will only be good for reading or hobby work with the lamp right beside your space. With all the build-up of this lamp that I read before making this decision, I guess I expected an "indoor sun". That's not what I got. I got a good sturdy swing-arm lamp suited for being very close to the action.

Which is okay. I'm not disappointed in the lamp itself, only in the fact that I expected more out of the illumination. My apartment has really dark paneling, carpets, and furniture, and I need something to lighten up the "cave". I hoped this lamp might be it, but it is not. Fine for close work, but if you expect it to light your cave, it won't do that.

Also, it requires a special type of bulb that I've never seen before, so I don't know how practical this lamp is going to be in the long run if I can't find replacement bulbs or they are expensive to order.

So, bottom line is that the lamp is fine, no problems or complaints, but I expected more out of the illumination feature. If all you need is a reading lamp or hobby lamp, this will be fine. But be aware that the specialty bulb may be hard to replace. Would I recommend it based on the hype? No.

GoodLight Natural Palm Oil Candles

Did you know that the average candle is made from paraffin? Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum, a non-renewable resource. And while it might seem obvious, many people don’t realize that inhaling the fumes from paraffin candles is not good for your health. According to a study done at South Carolina State University in 2009, the fumes from paraffin candles are still linked to cancer, birth defects and such respiratory ailments as asthma, especially when there are many of them burning in an enclosed space like a restaurant or church.

After it’s scraped out of oil refineries, paraffin wax is usually: bleached by adding dioxin and other poisonous chemicals; texturized with acrolyn (a known carcinogen); and then mixed with animal-based stearic acid (a nasty byproduct of the meatpacking slaughterhouses) to harden it so that it can be made into candles. When paraffin candles burn, they emit black soot and toxic fumes—similar in chemistry to diesel exhaust—containing poisonous chemicals such as benzene, toluene, naphthalene, tri-decane, tetra-decane, penta-decane, and hexadecane. Unfortunately, the FDA doesn’t require candle makers to list the ingredients in candles, so you never really know what you’re burning.

Kinda scary, isn't it?

Beeswax and soy wax are acceptable alternatives, but they can be very expensive and costly to produce and sustain.

Enter palm wax candles from GoodLight Natural Candles.

Palm wax?? Yes. Palm wax is a completely non-toxic product of palm fruit, a rapidly renewable resource that also happens to be the most efficient and highest yielding oil-producing plant on earth. And GoodLight's palm wax candles cost about the same as, and sometimes less than, their paraffin counterparts.

GoodLight palm wax candles are unscented and all natural. They burn for a long time, too, with no soot or carcinogens being emitted into the atmosphere. While the main focus of the GoodLight Natural Candles company is selling to restaurants, bars, churches, spas, weddings, wherever candles are traditionally burned for ambience or ritual, I believe that there is a vast consumer market for these all-natural candles as well.

The fine folks at GoodLight were kind enough to send me a sample of their candles. I received an 8-pack of 15-hour votive candles (only $7.99 - that's $1 each, about what you'd pay for paraffin votives, right?) and a 6-pack of 5-hour tea light candles ($1.99 - again, about the same as paraffin).

I tried the votive candles and I am delighted that they are made from 100% palm wax and contain no additives. The wick is pure cotton and contains no lead or metal of any kind. Like any votive candle, the GoodLight votives are designed to melt and fill the holder with molten wax. Make sure to use a holder just wide enough to fit the votive. This votive will burn long and bright without harmful smoke or soot. Going green with candlelight just got affordable.

While I have to be honest and admit that I miss a bit of scent, I have nothing but good things to say about these candles. And besides, you don't want scented tea light candles under your chafing dish, do you? I thought not. The votives would be beautiful at holiday time without adding any additional scent to your holiday meals or decorations. And of course there are some people who just don't like anything scented at all.

Learn more about palm wax candles and the GoodLight Natural Candles company at their website http://www.naturalcandles.com. Because you breathe what you burn.

At the company's request, I am giving away the 6-pack set of tea light candles to the first reader of my blog who emails me at tnshadylady at gmail(dot)com and answers this question:

Jon and David are the co-owners of the GoodLight Natural Candles company. Jon also has another candle company. Tell me the name of Jon's other candle company and what he specializes in. (hint: you can find the answer on the GoodLight website) Good luck!

Disclaimer: I was provided a sample of GoodLight Natural Candles gratis in exchange for providing this unbiased review of the product. {Thanks David!} No other monetary consideration was involved, and my review was not influenced in any way.

Domaine Ltd. fashion jewelry you can afford! {review & giveaway}

Have you heard about Domaine Factory Outlet Ltd.? Neither had I until just recently when I was given the opportunity to try a piece of jewelry from them. And you know me -- I love jewelry! Especially bracelets. Especially big, gaudy, heavy bracelets.

There's nothing gaudy about this big heavy bracelet that Domaine Ltd. sent me to try. Take a look at this beauty:

Isn't it gorgeous!! And heavy!! Not so heavy that it's a bother to wear, but heavy enough that you definitely know you are wearing it, and isn't that the whole idea? Even though it's a substantial piece of jewelry, I can wear it while typing or doing any number of normal things and it doesn't get in the way at all.

This bracelet suits me to a tee! I've worn it several times already and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. It fits very nicely, and even though it is a stretch bracelet, it doesn't pinch at all like so many others do. And the antique style is just perfect for me! It looks like it could be a hundred... no, a thousand years old.

But the best part? This lovely bracelet sells at Domaine Fashion Outlet Ltd. for only $5.95! Yes, you read that right - that's five American dollars and ninety-five American cents. And orders of $25 or more ship free! I'm tellin' ya, this is the best bargain I've seen in a loooong time!

Ten Tips for Ensuring a Healthy, Safe and Successful School Year

Yep, it's high summer now, but guess what? Soon the ol' school bells will be ringing again and kids will be going back to class.

What? They don't have school bells anymore? Shame, that. Such a lovely piece of nostalgia!

Okay, so the buzzers will be buzzing and kids will be going back to class. How's that?

Time to think about new school year wardrobes, supplies, and oh yes, health.

Here are Ten Tips for Ensuring a Healthy, Safe and Successful School Year:

1. Make sure your kids get a healthy breakfast before they dash out the door. Yes, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, especially for children.

2. Make sure they have healthy lunches and snacks. Don't rely on them to make good choices. A candy bar and soda is not a healthy lunch.

3. If your kids make their own lunches, be sure to keep plenty of healthy choices available to them, like fruit, yogurt, nuts, etc.

4. Plan ahead to take advantage of any tax breaks your state may offer on back to school clothing and supplies.

5. If your child uses a computer, have it thoroughly checked out and routine maintenance done before they take it to class. This will save a lot of headaches down the road (trust me on this!).

6. A new backpack for the new school year? How about researching some eco-friendly backpacks this time? There are lots of good alternatives that are made from recycled and/or reclaimed materials, such as old parachute and billboard materials.

7. Don't wait till the last minute to pick up new school supplies. Chances are every other mom in town is down at the local discount variety store getting them too and your options will be severely limited to what's available.

8. Does your school require school uniforms? Time to start planning for them now. Your child may have grown an inch or two since last year and those old uniforms, while still perfectly good, may no longer fit.

9. Be sure to check out whatever immunization records your school may require. Getting a doctor's appointment at the last minute can be a risky proposition.

10. Give some serious consideration to having your child's eyes checked before the school year begins. Nothing saps a child's enthusiasm for school like not being able to see properly.

Learning is visual, so eye care is critical! Twenty-five percent of kids struggle with vision problems that impact learning. Eighty percent of everything a child learns in his first 12 years comes through his eyes. If corrective lenses are needed, select lighter, stronger and safer lenses such as Airwear. Airwear lenses offer safe, durable lenses for children, those who like to play sports and those who push their lenses to the limit.

Airwear polycarbonate lenses are a product of Essilor, the leading manufacturer of optical lenses in the United States. Airwear lenses are light, safe and embrace environmentally conscious manufacturing practices.

Designed for comfort, performance, protection and style, Airwear lenses made of polycarbonate material are 43 percent lighter and 25% thinner than standard plastic lenses.

Block 100% of UVA/UVB rays
Non-glare
Scratch resistant
Shatter-proof
Easy to clean

Airwear lenses are better than standard plastic. They are virtually unbreakable and lighter than regular lenses, and are the ultimate choice for every lifestyle for you or your child. Airwear lenses offer unparalleled protection. They are 12x stronger than standard plastic lenses with 100% UV protection.

Many eye injuries are preventable. The American Academy of Ophthalmology reports that more than 100,000 people sustain eye injuries each year. Airwear lenses are tough and durable — so tough that NASA uses the same material to construct visors for astronauts. Furthermore, 12 to 15 million people annually become blind from cataracts--and about 20% of those cases may be caused or compounded by sun exposure. Airwear lenses provide 100% protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Feel the difference. You will see and feel the difference when wearing Airwear lenses. They are lighter and 25% thinner than regular lenses. Airwear lenses are as versatile as they come. It’s all possible with Airwear lenses. Airwear lenses offer safe, durable lenses for you and your children.

Airwear lenses are compatible with the most trusted vision brands and designs, such as Varilux®, Crizal®, Xperio™, DEFINITY and Transitions.
